James Milner: Liverpool captain and Sadio Mane react to West Ham thrashing
JAMES MILNER believes Liverpool lived up to expectations in their 4-0 win over West Ham today.
Jurgen Klopp reacts to 4-0 West Ham victory
Goals from Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge, plus a Sadio Mane double, saw the Reds cruise past West Ham to start the season with a bang.
Liverpool are early contenders for the title this season and have strengthened since reaching last term’s Champions League final.
And Milner, playing as captain at Anfield today, was delighted with the performance as much as the result.
"There is expectation at the beginning of the season and everyone wants a good start," he said.
The most important thing was to get off with a good start
"We've made some new signings and it was going to be a tough start.
"Last year was a long season and with the World Cup boys coming back in with such a short rest, they have done well. I've done it before and know how hard it is.
"It has benefited me [having the summer off]. It's the same with all teams with international players out and the first game after pre-season is always tough.”
"The most important thing was to get off with a good start."
Mane also spoke after the match and was trilled to get off to a winning start in the Premier League.
"We played great football, created lots of chances and deserved to win,” the forward said.
“I’m happy to score goals for the team.
“I think the team was fantastic today, and we now have important games to come. We take it game-by-game."
Next up for Liverpool is a clash at Crystal Palace on Monday week.
As for West Ham, they host Bournemouth next Saturday.
