Lando Norris shared a moment to remember with race engineer Will Joseph after the chequered flag in Baku as the McLaren man dedicated the result to his father, who passed away 10 years to the day.

Norris produced a stellar recovery drive at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, running long on the hard compound tyres before eating into a 15-second deficit to finish ahead of title rival Max Verstappen on track.

The Brit then gained a further two positions on the penultimate lap, jumping from sixth in the order to fourth after Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz found the wall at the exit of Turn Two.

On the cooldown lap, Joseph came onto the radio to tell Norris: "Lando, do you mind if I dedicate this to someone?" His driver replied: "Go ahead Will, of course you can."

The McLaren engineer continued: "My dad passed away 10 years ago today as I was on the way to Singapore, or just about to leave to Singapore. So this is to him, who would be very proud of us all."

Oscar Piastri wins the F1 Grand Prix of Azerbaijan

The weekend was one to remember in many regards, not least because McLaren now head to the Singapore Grand Prix with a 20-point advantage at the top of the Constructors' Championship standings.

McLaren's impressive result was executed thanks to some well-orchestrated teamwork between Norris and eventual race-winner Oscar Piastri. The young Australian benefitted greatly as his team-mate slowed Sergio Perez down, scuppering the Red Bull driver's undercut attempt.

“It’s tough. At that point I was stuck behind Alex, so couldn’t do a lot. I didn’t slow down, I just saved my tyres a little bit more. It allowed Oscar to stay ahead and potentially get a win. I’m happy that I helped him, and played a small part in that.

"I don’t think it cost me. It’s always impossible to know. I was stuck behind Alex so I don’t think it changed the outcome. But it changed the outcome for Oscar so that was my job, to help Oscar.”
