Max Verstappen has backed up Adrian Newey’s recent comments suggesting that there is a bias within the British media against the likes of the three-time world champion and former Red Bull star Sebastian Vettel.

In a recent appearance on the High Performance podcast, Newey - who was announced as a part of Aston Martin’s team from 2025 onwards ahead of the race in Baku - suggested that Sky Sports and other portions of the British media have a bias against Verstappen and other non-British drivers.

“I think from the outside I’m not sure people fully appreciate and understand Max, just like they didn’t with Sebastian,” the Aston Martin-bound engineer explained. “First of all, there’s this sort of demonisation both of them suffered at times, which I think is very unfair, and maybe that’s also a little bit of the British media if I’m honest.

“Sky have a huge influence around the world, their viewing is truly international, but their coverage is quite nationalistic dare I say, and that can have an influence. It’s this thing that now with journalism typically, there is that trend to sort of either put people on a pedestal or knock them down.”

When Verstappen was asked about his long-serving colleague’s comments he didn’t hold back. “Absolutely. I agree 100 per cent,” he told Viaplay. “See it like this: if 85 per cent of the media is Dutch, then you secretly always have a bias for a Dutchman doing better than everybody else.

“And in terms of discussions you will always defend your countryman instead of others. That’s just the way it is, you know that as well. Of course, you try to keep it as neutral as possible and some countries go overboard with it, I think.

“I just do my thing. With some, you have a good relationship and some you’re just not as interested in. Ultimately all that matters is I do well on track. They can say and shout whatever they want, it doesn’t matter!"

Verstappen is no stranger to the reporting nuances that come from a title battle with a British driver, having gone toe-to-toe with Lewis Hamilton in one of the most heated World Championships fights in the sport’s history in 2021.

That history is now repeating itself as Verstappen finds himself in a showdown with Lando Norris. Both the Drivers’ Championship and Constructors’ Championship titles are on the line ahead of the season finale in Abu Dhabi in December.
