Gianpiero Lambiase - race engineer for three-time world champion Max Verstappen - has been handed an internal promotion at Red Bull following interest from both McLaren and Ferrari.

The 43-year-old was previously the head of race engineering at Red Bull, but will now take over as head of racing. This role change will see him take over some of Audi-bound Jonathan Wheatley's duties, although he will still be Verstappen's race engineer.

This change comes after Red Bull rebuffed interest from McLaren and Ferrari for Lambiase's services, with the latter looking to bring him on board as Lewis Hamilton's race engineer.

Lambiase's new role comes amid a major restructuring effort from Christian Horner following a string of key departures, including Wheatley and Adrian Newey, who has signed for rivals Aston Martin.

Alongside Verstappen's race engineer, Stephen Knowles and Gerrard O'Reilly both have new roles as head of sporting regulations and head of logistics respectively.

There is also a new role for the senior engineer of car engineering Richard Wolverson, who will act as the head of racing operations moving forward.

Discussing the restructure, team principal Horner said: “We are in the midst of a period of significant change and development at Oracle Red Bull Racing, and in light of the challenges to come, we have made the decision to alter the structure of the race team

“The appointments will serve to give us greater capacity across a number of crucial areas and ultimately will, I believe, make the team more competitive. For me, it is especially rewarding to have promoted people from within.

"We have a huge resource of exceptionally talented people at Oracle Red Bull Racing and I am delighted that we can give them the opportunity to shine in roles that were not previously open. It’s a step forward for the team as a whole.”
