Formula One driver Fernando Alonso has revealed the huge changes to his diet to stay in peak condition. The F1 veteran has been competing in the sport since 2001 but is still searching for marginal gains to aid his performance.

It is approaching 20 years since Alonso won the first of his two world titles with Reanult in 2005. At 24 years old, Alonso was then the youngest-ever champion and retained his world title the following year.

Despite spending three years away from the F1 circuit to pursue endurance and IndyCar racing, twice winning 24 Hours of Le Mans, Alonso holds the record for the most starts in Formula One history. That type of longevity does not come without sacrifices, though, as the Aston Martin driver has made clear.

"I don't eat much in general. Pedro de la Rosa eats like three people,” Alonso joked about his Aston Martin teammate. "Eight or nine months ago I started to stop eating meat and fish.”

“I felt sick or I felt too heavy in general, digestion took a little longer,” he told DAZN. “Let's say that without being too strict I think I have a vegetarian diet."

While there is no moral reason behind Alonso’s decision to ditch meat, he believes it will aid his performance on the track and overall lifestyle. The 43-year-old seemingly made the change at the turn of the year in his search for every possible advantage, having been bluntly honest about the issues he has faced racing for Aston Martin, with Alonso sitting ninth in the driver standings.

"I think the car today was ready to be sixteenth or seventeenth? We have almost no strengths and that makes the races difficult for us,” he said after the recent Monza Grand Prix. “But we have to keep fighting to come back stronger. Let's see if there is an answer, some action, not always coming with the same car."

"Then, in the end, we finished eleventh,” Alonso added. “It hurts enormously not to have taken any points by a single second in the race. But eleventh is a hell of a lot more than we deserve. It is what it is.

"It was a difficult race. We optimised the pace as best we could, but we had problems with the pace of the car on track today.”
