Chapman, 23, was going well against the Aussies in Auckland when he came unstuck by a Billy Stanlake bouncer.
New Zealand were 220 for 3 ahead of the last ball of the 18th over when Chapman missed his pull shot and took a nasty blow to the helmet.
But as if that wasn't painful enough, things quickly went from bad to worse.
As Chapman swivelled round, his helmet cannoned into the floor and rolled into the stumps with enough force to knock the bails off.

Mark Chapman has a wry smile after being dismissed in bizarre circumstances
The Hong Kong born batsman smiled as he made his way off having made 16 from 14 balls but the freak dismissal wasn't too costly.
Martin Guptil's 105 off 54 balls helped propel them to 243-6 off their 20 overs at Eden Park.
The total is even more impressive given Eden Park is the third-slowest scoring T20 venue in New Zealand.
Captain Kane Williamson had earlier won the toss and opted to bat, believing the used surface would become more difficult to bat on as the game wore on.
