Cricket star Josh Baker dies at the age of 20 as Worcestershire pen heartbreaking tribute

Worcestershire star Josh Baker has died aged just 20 years old.

Worcestershire County Cricket Club have confirmed the passing of starlet Josh Baker, who has died aged just 20 years old. Baker, who turned professional in 2021, was dubbed a 'popular figure' during an emotional statement from Worcestershire CCC.

Baker's death was confirmed by Worcestershire on Thursday afternoon. Speaking on their website, the cricket club said: "Worcestershire County Cricket Club is heartbroken to announce the untimely passing of Josh Baker, who was aged only 20 years old.

"Josh turned professional with the Club in 2021 and quickly became a popular figure within the squad. More than his skills as a spin bowler, it was his vibrant spirit and infectious enthusiasm that endeared him to everyone he met. His warmth, kindness, and professionalism were remarkable, making him a true credit to his family and a loved member of our team."

During his short career, the talented young spin bowler made 22 first-class appearances, taking 43 wickets in the process. On top of that, Baker was also capped at under-19 level for England, having featured against Sri Lanka in 2021.

Former England spinner Ashley Giles, Worcestershire’s Chief Executive Officer, also expressed his heartbreak by saying: “The news of Josh’s passing has left us all devastated.

“Josh was much more than a teammate; he was an integral part of our cricket family. We will all miss him terribly. All our love and prayers go out to Josh’s family and friends.”

Since news about Baker's death broke, tributes from the wider cricket community have been flooding in. The official English and Wales Cricket Board shared their condolences via X. Their statement read: "The ECB is desperately sad to learn of the passing of Josh Baker.

"This is devastating news. We extend our best wishes to Josh's family and friends, to everyone who knew and loved him, and to everyone at Worcestershire CCC."

Whereas the official England Cricket account posted: "Heart-breaking news. Rest in peace, Josh. Our thoughts are with Josh's loved ones at this desperately sad time."

Worcestershire CCC have confirmed plans to pay tribute to Baker will be communicated in due course.
