How many episodes are in Black Mirror season 5?
Netflix has confirmed Black Mirror season five is going to be hitting screens at some point in the future.
Season five doesn't yet have an episode count or exact release date.
Black Mirror seasons three and four had six episodes each and were produced by Netflix.
Black Mirror previously only had three episodes per season when it was aired on Channel 4 as well as a festive special called White Christmas.
Since the move to Netflix, episodes of Black Mirror have varied in running time with season three’s Hated In The Nation marking the programme’s first feature-length instalment.
It’s as yet unknown how many episodes will be in season five but it could well be another six standalone stories.
However, there have been theories that season five could have 12 episodes instead after a teaser trailer hinted as much.
Other theories have suggested that actually the 12 episodes will be split into two seasons with six each, which would fit with its predecessors.
When will Black Mirror season 5 be released?
Netflix announced that Black Mirror had been renewed for a fifth season following much speculation.
There’s no confirmed release date yet but fans could expect a wait if there are more episodes in the new run.
Previous release dates have varied with season four dropping on Netflix in October 2016 and the latest run hitting the video-on-demand service in December 2017.
The streaming giant confirmed the recommission via Twitter, posting a cryptic video featuring 12 TV screens playing scenes from different episodes of Black Mirror.
As the camera pulled out, the televisions switched to a loading screen suggesting that there were 12 new episodes pending.
The familiar Black Mirror theme music started playing and the screen went blank before the show’s logo appeared and cracked.
“Be right back” and the Netflix logo then appeared, confirming that the show would be back for another outing.
What will happen in Black Mirror season 5?
No plot details have been released as yet but each episode will have a technological slant to it.
Seasons four and five marked a shift from the out and out bleak, uncompromising visions of the future and featured a whole host of stories that fell into different genres.
For instance, Hated In The Nation had thriller elements, Metalhead was very much a horror story, and the Emmy Award-winning San Junipero was a love story.
Going by this, season five will again be self-contained stories that will have different tones and themes.
Season four finale Black Museum also revealed that all of the stories from the series were connected in the same universe, so there could be more of the same in the forthcoming run.
Along with the release of season four last year, a book of short stories that fell into the vein of Black Mirror was announced.
According to Amazon, the book titled 1: Black Mirror: Volume I: A Literary Season will be release in March 2019.
The stories have been penned by a variety of writers and edited by Brooker and could also serve as the basis for season five.
Black Mirror seasons 1-4 are available on Netflix now.
