While Strictly Come Dancing has become a bonafide Saturday night spectacle, it wasn’t always the smooth-sailing success story it is today.
Judge Craig Revel Horwood, who has been Strictly Come Dancing’s meanest judge since the shows birth, admitted he initially thought the concept was a “terrible idea”.
Recalling the early days, he said: “I think we spent about two-and-a-half pence on the scenery, and about 10p on the lighting.

“After about two weeks, three weeks, the popularity was just growing and growing. It’s just insane, actually. It’s been sold on to over 56 countries worldwide. What other BBC show’s ever done that?”
The documentary comes exactly a week before the live shows get underway which will see a humungous shake-up to the format, bound to leave the Strictly Come Dancing stars terrified.
Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One on September 23, while Puttin’ on the Glitz: The Strictly Story airs tomorrow at 8pm on BBC Radio 5 Live.
