However, it wasn’t the head judge who was auditioning but his namesake, a 47-year-old IT analyst from the Isle of Man.
The Britain’s Got Talent hopeful gave quite the performance with a bizarre audition that involved balancing tea spoons on his face.
“I think this is the first time my act’s been seen on Britain’s Got Talent, so it will be interesting to see how the judges take to it,” contestant Simon confided to the camera shortly before his big moment.
After walking out onto the stage, auditionee Simon introduced himself and got quite a reaction from the ITV judging panel.
“No way!” shouted Alesha Dixon, while the 57-year-old music mogul looked far from pleased as he asked: “Seriously?!”
Meanwhile, Amanda Holden cheekily quipped to the hopeful: "Simon Cowell, seriously? What do you do Simon Cowell? Do you terrorise people as well?”

He replied: “Nothing as glamours as that. I work in IT. I’ve been doing this for quite a few years.”
The hopeful then went on to demonstrate his talent to the panel and the audience, but it was clear that judge Simon was struggling to come to terms with his namesake and could simply look on in bemusement.
Spoon balancer Simon was not the only one to leave his mark on the judges, schoolboy daredevil Charley Dyson showed off his skills on a scooter.

His energetic routine saw him riding up and down ramps at high speed while doing flips and jumps.
Along with nine-year-old Charley’s performance, there was also Kieran Beattie, who showed the panel one of the most dangerous acts in the history of the ITV programme.
Shortly before he was seen balancing a 10-foot flaming ladder on his chest, he said: “This is going to be the biggest thing I’ve ever done in my life.”
Britain’s Got Talent continues on ITV next Saturday at 8pm.
