The 58-year-old actor admitted that with new companion Bill (played by Pearl Mackie) stepping on board the TARDIS, the programme would almost be starting afresh.
Speaking at a screening in London for the highly-anticipated Christmas special, The Return of Doctor Mysterio, he said: "Pearl's fantastic, it's a different energy because her character doesn't know anything about the world of Doctor Who."
The Scottish star, who plays the 12th incarnation of the Time Lord, went on to say: "So in a way it's sort of a reboot because we take this series back to its roots in a way because it's essentially this stranger from outer space with his time and space machine, whisking Bill off into corners of the universe to meet monsters."
Co-star and Little Britain comedian Matt Lucas, who was also at the event, described Bill as "novel" and that her character felt "contemporary".

While Peter could not give anything away, about the new episodes he hinted that viewers should watching out for "creaky floorboards".
"I think you should be very careful when you hear a creak, when you step on the floorboards and you hear a creak. I think you should think twice about what the creak is," he told media including Express.co.uk.
Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat also dropped some hints about what fans could expect about the monsters, saying: "Well, we've got some properly scary ones, we've got some new ones, we've got some old ones."
The BBC's Director-General Tony Hall also announced that series 10 of Doctor Who would be airing in April 2017.
Earlier this year rising star Pearl, 29, was unveiled as Jenna Coleman's replacement in the role of assistant.
