For years, he brought a smile to audience's faces with his comical performance of the Spanish waiter who drove hotel manager Basil Fawlty mad with his mistakes.
The German-born star appeared in all 12 episodes of the sitcom and delivered some of the most memorable lines of the show.

Manuel's most well-known phrase is arguably 'I know nothing'
'I know nothing!'
Perhaps his most well-known line from the sitcom, his catchphrase 'I know nothing!' had viewers in stitches when he first said it and 40 years later it still makes people smile.
A smack on the head
Manuel was often bullied by hotel manager. In one hilarious scene, Basil can be seen leading the waiter into the reception of Fawlty Towers and explaining who he and his wife are.
He then turns to Manuel and hits him over the head, saying: "This a smack on the head."

Manuel's English skills
The hapless character often brought a smile to faces when he practised speaking English. In one particular scene, he left Major Green confused when he could be heard practising his pronunciation but could not be seen, leading the Major to believe a stag's head was talking to him.
Que?
Manuel was often left confused by the demand's of his manager and would simply respond: "Que?" leaving Basil furious and frustrated.

Manuel and the rat
When Manuel's pet rat goes missing it causes chaos in the hotel restaurant. From insulting guests at Fawlty Towers whilst trying to find the rodent to crawling under tables, his behaviour landed him in trouble.

He could barely keep on top of his work load in the restaurant so it was always going to be a disaster when he was left in charge of the phone at reception.
