The presenters were accompanied by dog Clover when an almighty bang was heard from behind the camera, making them all jump as well as viewers at home.
Despite looking visibly surprised, the 54-year-old was quick to explain the cause of the noise while calming down Holly, 35, and the adorable pooch.
After a flash of bright light was seen, Phillip said: "What I love is that the lamp exploded, everybody jumped apart from Clover! Everyone OK? We're just looking at that up there now. Get a shot…"
"How often does that happen?" the blonde beauty asked, to which her companion quipped: "In here? Quite regularly!"
Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were given the shock of their lives on This Morning today
The presenters informed viewers a lamp had exploded
Holly continued: "When a lightbulb blows in my house, they all start to go. Does that mean we'll have fireworks throughout out the show?"
Phillip laughed: "Luckily it doesn't throw the surface breaker and I've got to go into the cupboard under the stairs and switch it back on again."
Viewers were shown the lamp in question, before the stars carried on with the instalment.
Holly said she glad she didn't swear
The pair proved to be quite the professionals and carried on
Of course fans were quick to comment on Twitter, with one person writing: "What is with your lights exploding all the time #thismorning?"
Another two posts read: "That even made me jump #thismorning," and: "Morning all. That was an explosive opening to #thismorning."
This Morning airs weekdays at 10.30am on ITV1.
