Arabella Weir, who stars in the new show - which will air on BBC Two on Friday nights - has said the comparison sets "a high bar" but one it seems she thinks they can meet.
"It's a big compliment, quite a high bar," she told Fiona Phillips on Lorraine today.
"The writing is absolutely brilliant… It's very, very real in that Royle Family way. There's no attempt to do anything outrageous.
"What I'm trying to say is we're not glamorous."

She added: "I'm wearing the same pair of leggings throughout the show and a pair of slippers. I've never been so comfy in my life!"
The programme is also notable for its strong tally of hilarious female characters, with Arabella starring alongside the likes of Elaine C Smith, Doon Mackichan and Sharon Rooney.
"We were shooting a scene and Elaine C Smith said, 'there are three women sitting around a table and we're all being funny'," Arabella recalled.
"It's just women being funny and being at the centre of things, in the way that they are up and down the country but is rarely seen on TV."
