The X-Files: Mulder and Scully’s relationship status revealed in behind-the-scenes clip
WITH all-new episodes of The X-Files now just weeks away, a major spoiler about the state of Mulder and Scully’s relationship has been revealed.
The X-Files is back next month
In a 21-minute behind-the-scenes clip, fans find out that their previous romance is well and truly over.
The pair, played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, were previously seen as a couple and it was suggested that they had a child together, but the relationship ended at some point between 2008's film and the first episode of the new run.
"Through the course of the show, when it ran for over 200 episodes, the characters grew," creator Chris Carter says in the video.
"Mulder and Scully for nine years had a platonic relationship. Even though we suggest that they had a child together, we never saw them as a couple until the second movie.
The pair are one of TV's best-loved double-acts
David Duchovny has said the lack of focus on their relationship is a real strength
Through the course of the show, when it ran for over 200 episodes, the characters grew
"When we come back to them in the new series, we will have been honest to their relationship previously, but we now find them in another state.
"Seven or eight years have elapsed. Time has been difficult for the relationship. We will investigate what's happened in that time."
The clip also reveals that their son, William, is now a teenager.
Furthermore, Duchovny has further explained to The Hollywood Reporter what the state of things between Mulder and Scully is: "We're not bickering while we're running with our guns out. The relationship was never played [before this]," he said.
Hype is huge for the new episodes
“It was never the predominant aspect of the show as written. It was something that was unspoken. I think it remains that way.”
He added: “I personally don't want to Mulder and Scully sitting in couples' therapy; that's not what the show is. You can find that on other shows."
The X-Files returns on Sunday, January 24 on Fox in the US. UK broadcast details are yet to be confirmed.
