The 42-year-old received a barrage of positive comments as he took to screens for the charity telethon tonight.
Dermot is hosting the show alongside Tess Daly, after Sir Terry Wogan was forced to miss out for the first time in 15 years when a back injury left him unable to participate.
The 77-year-old’s absence didn’t go unnoticed, with Tess opening proceedings by telling the veteran entertainer: “We know you are watching Terry, we hope we do you proud.”
Admitting he was "honoured" to be there, Dermot added: "Terry get well soon, your shoes are big shoes to fill."

But the former X Factor host had nothing to worry about, as fans took to Twitter to praise the star.
"Dermot O'Leary is a natural progression from Sir Terry. Such a natural and professional anchorman," said one.
Another added: "Children In Need won't be the same without Sir Terry but Dermot was an excellent choice of stand in!"
"Words can't describe how much love I have for Dermot o Leary," said one more.
Despite the compliments, many fans couldn’t help notice the height difference between a 5ft 7ins Dermot and a towering Tess.

"Tess Daly could have worn a pair of shoes with a slightly shorter heel standing next to Dermot Oleary, He looks like her son #ChildrenInNeed," wrote one.
"I realize Dermot O'Leary was a last minute addition, but didn't they have time to get him some lifts so he could stand next to Tess Daly?" said another.
One user pointed informed: "We just googled Dermot's height as we weren't sure if Tess was an actual giant. He's 5ft 7.5" #BBCCiN #factoftheday."
