Downton Abbey is drawing to a close
Although there is one last return to the famous stately home scheduled in the shape of the Christmas special, tonight provides the series finale.
TV Editor David Stephenson took a sneak preview and says it does not disappoint.
Whatever will we do without it?
Downton Abbey, the jewel in the ITV crown, all but fades from our screens tonight in an intriguing and emotional series finale.
Downton Abbey, the jewel in the ITV crown
Yes, there is a Christmas special, but loose ends are tied up tonight with dramatic climaxes in the six-year reign of Britain’s most popular period drama.
Inevitably, hopes and expectations are confounded.
It is worth remembering the drama has spanned a dozen years, so initial congratulations must go to the local doctor, at whatever hospital he finally presides, for keeping this family alive.
Yet it is ill-temper that stalks the halls of the Abbey tonight.
Just about every character is sniping away.
Butler Carson is at his most pompous, even Branson trades a blow or two.
One long-running story culminates in a rather unsettling scene.
There's still a Christmas special to come
But this is an episode for the main characters to get off their chests their real feelings before their lives transfer to ITV3.
Thankfully, away from the biting exchanges, there are tender moments, together with touching romance.
Tissues at the ready.
