For many, classic English novels are considered sacrosanct, and screen adaptations can invite substantial criticism — yet this particular series seems to capture the 19th century with extraordinary authenticity.

First aired in 2006, this interpretation of Jane Eyre draws from Charlotte Brontë's novel of the same name, following the journey of its eponymous heroine as she navigates life as an orphan while attempting to build a better future for herself.

Running across four episodes, the series transports audiences through this enduring story, with Ruth Wilson assuming the lead role opposite Toby Stephens as Edward Rochester.

The pair gradually develop feelings for one another despite his strange behaviour and the mysterious sounds she detects reverberating throughout the house.

Ultimately, it transpires that he's hiding not simply a dark secret, but an actual person, with devastating ramifications for all concerned.

Viewers have been effusive in their praise of Wilson's depiction of Jane Eyre, a performance which secured her a BAFTA nomination. One fan headed to IMDB to voice their appreciation in an enthusiastic review, reports the Liverpool Echo.

It said: "A wonderful adaptation of this classic. The casting is excellent; Ruth makes a delightful and intriguing Jane, and Toby Stephens is an utterly fantastic Rochester.

"This is a compelling series; each episode leaves you anxious to see the next. The set designers and costume designers have excelled themselves, and the lighting in particular is superb."

Another fan added: "This is the first adaptation of Jane Eyre that I have seen, and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Ruth Wilson, a relative newcomer to TV, is fantastic in the role of Jane.

"She captivates the role brilliantly, and her facial expressions say it all; she needs not ever speak. She is an amazing actress, and I hope to see her more in the future."

When it originally broadcast, despite countless acclaimed adaptations already in existence, it succeeded with both audiences and critics alike.

The reaction was overwhelmingly enthusiastic, with reviewers commending how true the series stayed to the original novel while simultaneously keeping viewers gripped.

Regarding the novel, The Hollywood Reporter at the time claimed its adaptation is "restoring it to its full glory. Meanwhile, The Guardian claimed it proved that it's possible to make a successful drama by "telling the story straight".

Before this version, there had been a 1943 film adaptation starring Orson Welles, as well as a 1983 BBC miniseries featuring Timothy Dalton. Nevertheless, it is frequently the 2006 BBC series that is referenced as the finest of these adaptations.

One viewer said: "What a true masterpiece. " It is superb, anyone who does not like this version is mad. It has all the right qualities for a classic. Ruth Wilson is superb, and I cannot believe that she is only fresh out of drama school, what a brilliant actress."

Those wishing to experience Ruth Wilson's captivating portrayal of Jane Eyre can stream the four-part series on BBC iPlayer right now.
