A Celebrity Traitors star has landed a huge new role in a beloved period drama. Fans of The Traitors will recall Irish actress Ruth Codd taking part in the celebrity edition of the BBC gameshow last year.

The 29-year-old was selected as a Faithful by presenter Claudia Winkleman, and swiftly identified Jonathan Ross as a Traitor after spotting shifts in his demeanour within the Scottish castle. Jonathan, along with fellow Traitors Alan Carr and Cat Burns, subsequently chose to murder Ruth, making the actress the third contestant to be eliminated during the night.

Ruth has now secured an exciting new role in the second series of period drama Bookish. The popular drama debuted last year and centred on an unconventional bookshop owner named Gabriel Book (portrayed by Doctor Who actor and writer Mark Gatiss), who assists the police in solving crimes in 1946 London. Following the recent completion of filming for the eagerly awaited second series of Bookish, fresh images have emerged, including photographs of Ruth as newcomer India Flynn, reports Wales Online.

The actress joins returning cast members Mark Gatiss as Gabriel Book, Polly Walker as Trottie Book and Connor Finch as Jack Blunt. The programme also features Elliot Levey as Inspector Bliss, Blake Harrison as Sergeant Morris and Buket Komur as Nora. Additionally, Rosie Cavaliero, Gerard Horan, Nadia Albina and Jonas Nay are set to reprise their roles as Ada Dredge, Mr Baseheart, Dr Calder and Felix.

Season two's guest stars include Jason Watkins as Harold Sneed and Miranda Richardson as Duchess Alberta, alongside Simon Callow as 'E', Rupert Graves as Colonel Reggie Winters, Claire Skinner as Mrs Calthrop, Youssef Kerkour as Yusuf, and Allan Corduner as Maxie Kleinmann, among others.

In the second series, protagonist Gabriel delves into the realm of spiritualism after being enlisted to crack a baffling case concerning medium Harold Sneed (Watkins). The synopsis reveals: "Off Savile Row, Bliss (Levey) asks Book to help in a puzzling murder at a gentleman's outfitters - the elderly tailor Maxie Kleinmann (Corduner) is keen to confess to the murder, but the evidence doesn't quite stack up and points to something much more complex and sinister.

"And Book and Jack (Finch) are sent to the seemingly charming German village of Würl by the mysterious 'E' (Callow) to thwart a thieving Duchess (Richardson) at Christmas time. However, festivities take a deadly turn when Book and Jack uncover secrets of their own, past and present, in an ominous castle brimming with plausible murder suspects."

Gabriel's continued involvement with the police brings personal risks, and before long his lavender marriage to childhood companion, Trottie (Walker), faces jeopardy from the suave Colonel Winters (Graves). The logline concludes: "Marrying post-war nostalgia with the reckless and life affirming atmosphere of the times, Bookish is a stylish period detective drama with a difference."

The debut series of Bookish launched last year to glowing viewer feedback, pulling in an average audience of 1.5 million. Since then, the programme has become U&Alibi's second most successful premiere on record.

This news comes after Celeb Traitors star Ruth disclosed she had undergone a second leg amputation in November 2025. Ruth's first amputation took place when she was 23, following a football injury sustained as a teenager that resulted in eight years of complications and chronic pain.

Celebrity Traitors is available to stream on BBC iPlayer, while Bookish season one can be streamed via Sky, Now and Virgin Media
