Blue Bloods star reveals 'tearful' final scene was filmed in a cemetery

Blue Bloods star Abigail Hawk has disclosed that her concluding performances as Abigail Baker were shot in a graveyard alongside other key cast members.

Speaking to Screen Time just before the show's anticipated return for the last eight episodes on CBS, following an unexpected axing, the actress shared insights into the emotional farewell.

Anticipation is sky-high among millions of fans eager to witness the finale of Frank Reagan's narrative, played by the legendary Tom Selleck, and his family's journey as committed NYPD officers.

Abigail let slip about the location of her final shoot, stating, "My last day, Tom's last day, gosh, quite a few of our last days on set, was at a cemetery."

She tantalisingly added, "Which is not giving anything away, but certainly dangling a little teaser."

Without spoiling if any main characters meet their demise, Abigail expressed how ethereal it felt shooting the ending scenes back in June, admitting the cast is still coming to terms with the show's end weeks after filming concluded.

"It was hard," she admitted further. "And I felt like I was almost watching myself because it was so surreal and I was so in it that I couldn't see it, if that makes sense?

"It was almost like being so close to the fire that I can't actually experience how hot it is."

Having worked closely with Selleck throughout 14 seasons of this acclaimed police series, the actress affirmed that there weren't just a few tears shed as they called 'cut' for the last time.

Abigail  reminisced about the emotional farewell on set, sharing, "We had our wonderful first AD, Tom Tobin, wrap each of us out and say, 'That's a series wrap on Abigail Hawk, detective Abigail Baker'," which was met with applause and tears.

She admitted to being overwhelmed by the moment: "And the applause and tears were received but also, like, I just wasn't able to process it in the moment.

"Just the loveliest thing to be hugged by our executive producers Kevin Wade and Siobhan Byrne O'Connor, who have been with us since the beginning."

The actress spoke highly of Selleck's enduring presence on television, noting, "And then to see Tom being wrapped out," and continued, "This wonderful legend of a man who had lightning strike twice. He's had such an incredible, illustrious career and would have never thought that, after the success of Magnum PI, to have this happen again and create such a venerable character.

"You could see the weight of that on him. We've been in touch and we're keeping the line open. I care so deeply for him. It's hard, you know? He's aware of his age but he's also just still got so much to say.

"And Len Cariou [who plays Frank's father Henry Reagan] is the same way. You have this 84-year-old who just did this absolutely heart-shattering play, Tuesdays With Morrie, where all of us that were able [to see it] witnessed the mastery of him. He's not done! In this industry, we hang people up. 'You're done'. But there's so much life there."

Abigail opened up about her emotional last day on the Blue Bloods set, made brighter by her husband's touching collage of the show's stars which he presented to her when she came home. While keeping finale details close to her chest, she reflects the sentiment from showrunner Kevin Wade that the last episode feels refreshingly normal.

Describing the finale, she shared, "It's just beautifully simple and ordinary," appreciating its openness to future possibilities and confessing, "You're not going to see a lot of changes for [Abigail] and I'm okay with that."

The actress teased the culmination of the Reagans' journey, admitting after reading the script, "When I finished reading the episode I texted Siobhan and Kevin and I wept. It is a very fitting way to complete the series. I'm not going to say finish, it's a lovely way to complete it."

Abigail kept the reason for her tears a mystery, saying, "I'm not going to say if the tears were joy or sadness because maybe it's both."

Blue Bloods season 14, part 2 premieres Friday, October 18 on CBS.
