A new school-set sitcom is scoring rave reviews amongst TV critics and comedy fans.

English Teacher (Season 1): Official trailer

FX’s new high school sitcom The English Teacher has been dubbed “hysterical” after its premiere on Monday.

Starring Brian Jordan Alvarez as high school teacher Evan Marquez, the new series follows a school faculty who struggle to connect with their Gen Z students.

Joining him at Morrison-Hensley High is his best friend Gwen Sanders (played by Stephanie Koenig), an optimistic history teacher who tries to see the best in everyone.

Things become complicated for Evan when he’s placed under investigation for kissing his boyfriend Malcolm (Jordan Firstman) in front of his students, despite the so-called incident happening some time ago.

He gives himself an ultimatum - no dating other members of the faculty - but is soon charmed by another teacher, Harry (Langston Kerman), who seems to have taken an interest.

The English Teacher currently has an impressive 94 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes after its debut this week.

Critics are eating up the new comedy, with The Hollywood Reporter saying the eight-episode first season “feels built to keep going - toward a broadcast-standard 22-episode season, even, hopefully for years and years.”

While The Washington Post calls it “an improbable, radically playful triumph.”

It’s not just TV journalists who are loving the series, though, as viewers who tuned in on Monday evening already can’t wait for the sitcom to continue next week.

When an iconic drag queen made an appearance, one viewer wrote: “Y’all, I jumped off of my couch and yelled, ‘Trixie freaking Mattel?!’ You HAVE to watch #EnglishTeacherFX.”

A fourth said: “Watching #EnglishTeacherFX live and already LOVING it. So funny and also sincere. Congratulations!!!!”

While Cosmopolitan’s entertainment editor posted: “Man, oh, man. I think #EnglishTeacherFX might be the best new comedy of the season.

“So refreshing, funny, and has one of the best soundtracks on TV right now.

“Brian Jordan Alvarez has created a laugh-out-loud series that I seriously need 10 more seasons of.”

Unfortunately, a UK streaming release date hasn’t been announced, but it’s expected to come to Disney+ soon in line with other FX shows like The Bear and Shogun.

The English Teacher continues Mondays at 10pm on FX. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
