BBC Breakfast airs 'worst episode ever' with 'rinse and repeat' Trump and Euros coverage

BBC Breakfast viewers grew tired of today's episode with ongoing coverage of the same two news stories.

Euro 2024: Sweet Caroline is played on the piano ahead of final

BBC Breakfast has aired its “worst episode ever” according to viewers, switching between coverage of the former president’s assassination attempt and the Euros 2024 final.

News broke last night, Saturday, July 13, that there had been an assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump during a Trump rally.

Thomas Matthew Cooks, 20, shot at Trump with a bullet grazing the controversial politician’s ear with blood quickly dripping down his face.

One spectator was killed, two have been left critically injured and Cooks himself was fatally shot by the Secret Service.

This was one of the two main news stories this morning with BBC Breakfast continuing to air extensive coverage ahead of the Euros 2024 final this evening between England and Spain.

Presenters John Watson and Sally Nugent were seen in Berlin, discussing predictions, manager Gareth Southgate’s words for the team and fans’ excitement.

To mark the potentially historic day in football, journalists Steve Rosenberg and Henry Zeffman also played a duet of Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond on piano but many called for it to be “muted”.

And with the programme covering just two stories throughout the morning, viewers weren’t shy about expressing their frustrations.

“This may well be the worst episode of #bbcbreakfast I've ever watched”, someone commented on X, formerly Twitter.

“Journalist calling Trump ‘President Trump’ multiple times, that awful piano duet and way too many interviews with football fans.”

A second agreed: “Turned on #bbcbreakfast to get an update on the Trump situation and I’ve so far had a lookalikey Southgate, a new MP at work and some reporters playing the piano? Did I imagine that last night?"

“Trump and the footy. Rinse and repeat. - that's all it's been since 7am”, another commented.

A fellow viewer questioned: “Is there not a single thing happening in the world that isn't Trump or football?!”

While another simply stated: “Here we go .....round three of the same segment.”

BBC Breakfast continues at 6am every day on BBC One.
