BBC Breakfast’s Carol Kirkwood shuts down Naga Munchetty as she says 'not a chance'

Tensions escalated on this week's BBC Breakfast as weather presenter Carol Kirkwood chatted about an incredible feat achieved by tightrope walker Jaan Roose.

BBC Breakfast: Carol jokes about Naga not getting a heart

BBC Breakfast turned awkward this week as Carol Kirkwood shut down her co-star Naga Munchetty after a conversation went too far.

Naga had been chatting about tightrope walker Jaan Roose with her co-star Charlie Stayt on the famous red sofa when things took a turn for the awkward. Charlie explained to viewers: “No-one has done this before. Travelling 3.6km across a 2cm wide rope – slacklining is what they call it – took three hours.

“He made his way all the way across, but 18 metres before reaching the end, he had a fall. He was so close to reaching his goal. He’s made history because no-one has done this before over that stretch of water, but he was just short of the World Record for the longest slackline walk.”

Naga sympathised: “It’s bad enough walking across a rope that’s 2cm wide but at the highest point, the walk was 265 metres in the air! I hadn’t seen him fall, and it did make me jump even though he was all strapped in with harnesses! He was fine.”

But that feeling seemed to extend to Carol when they headed over to her for the weather, with Naga joking: “Carol’s going to try it next, when the weather improves! Hello.”

Carol was giggling as she responded: “Not a chance! Even just watching it gives me the heebie-jeebies Naga. Good morning everybody!” Things moved swiftly on from the tense moment as Carol delivered the weather report – expertly changing the subject.

It comes after Carol was left “shaking in her shoes” after a discussion with Naga last week.

The pair had been chatting about a child chess prodigy before the weather forecast, with Naga revealing: “Do you know that I often think that for Carol, there's a game of chess played here every day, it's like you're always trying to anticipate the next move, aren't you Carol?"

Carol agreed: “Yes, trying to work out what’s going to come my way Naga.” Naga added: “Exactly, always slightly unnerving, which is quite enjoyable sometimes."

The meteorologist went on to quip: “I’m standing here shaking in my shoes.” But Naga was quick to shut her down, retorting: “No you’re not!” – which led to plenty of awkward chuckles.

In her personal life, Carol has recently defended her age-gap romance with her new husband Steve Randall. The 62-year-old married her 48-year-old husband last year, and now Carol has said: “If our ages were the other way around, nobody would ever mention it. I've had a few comments but I don't care.”
