Neil Patrick Harris unrecognisable in first ever role with The View’s Whoopi Goldberg

Neil Patrick Harris may be a comedy and Broadway icon now but he looked very different in his first role opposite Whoopi Goldberg.

Uncoupled: Neil Patrick Harris stars in Netflix trailer

Neil Patrick Harris fans wouldn’t recognise the former How I Met Your Mother star when he made his big debut 36 years ago.

The Gone Girl actor is marking his 51st birthday today, Saturday, June 15, having enjoyed more than three decades’ worth of professional success.

From his Broadway work on shows such as Cabaret, Sweeney Todd and Romeo And Juliet, to his onscreen roles on How I Met Your Mother, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Starship Troopers, Gone Girl and The Smurfs, just to name a few.

Having won and been nominated for a string of prestigious accolades, it’s no wonder that Harris is now a household name, celebrating his achievements with his husband David Burtka.

But the star’s journey started years prior when he was a youngster, in a role that many would assume was the actor and singer.

Harris’ first ever onscreen role was in 1988 when he was just 13-years-old, in the heartwarming drama Clara’s Heart.

He was behind the young star of the film David, the son of a young divorcee who is in need of a nanny to take care of him.

This is when Clara (Whoopi Goldberg) is brought in as a no-nonsense housekeeper to take care of their home as well as him.

And while their relationship doesn’t get off to the best of starts, it isn’t too long before the pair develop a special bond.

Harris is, of course, just a teenager with big glasses in Clara’s Heart and doesn’t take on a charming persona as he does in his films as an adult.

Starring alongside Harris in the movie is none other than veteran actress and The View panelist Whoopi Goldberg.

Apart from Clara’s Heart and the daytime talk show, the 68-year-old is probably best known for starring in Sister Act, Ghost, The Colour Purple and Made In America, just to name a few.

Harris opened up last year on Clara’s Heart and getting to work with Goldberg on the heartwarming project.

Why did Harry and Meghan make a Netflix series about their life?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have found themselves at the centre of public attention since they took a step back from senior royal duties in 2020.

In a trailer for the Netflix series about them, Prince Harry told viewers that “no one sees what’s happening behind closed doors” in a reference to how their lives may differ from what the public think about the couple. Meghan adds: “When the stakes are this high, doesn’t it make more sense to hear our story from us?”.

Reports suggested the Duke and Duchess of Sussex could receive up to $100 million for making the show, although this has been disputed and the true figure is unknown.

He told Role Recall last year: “It was an absolute game-changer.

“I had no real inclination to be in the entertainment industry outside of loving the musical revues in theme park shows.

“I had never been to New York, or seen a Broadway show. I was just fairly precocious and didn't have much fear acting in front of people.

“And to get to do that on such a high level, a Warner Bros. feature film opposite Whoopi Goldberg, who’s an amazing human.

“She treated me like a person, not a child. She educated me about so many things with such dignity and class.

“It was one hell of a way to start working.”
