Michaela Strachan and Chris Packham braved the chilly downpour to host the latest episode of Springwatch on BBC Two this evening, with fans being left gutted that the show had drawn to a close for another year.

During the episode, the hosts shared important updates on nests being constructed by an array of British birds, which included goshawks and sparrowhawks.

Michaela also revealed a completed wildlife mural which was covered in paintings of various animals and insects against a white backdrop.

As the episode got underway, Chris continued to joke about being in cold and wet conditions to present the show, as his Prada bucket hat and raincoat were clearly soaked from the rainfall.

He later left Michaela awkwardly laughing as he discussed an animal called a pine marten which was able to urinate backwards.

Chris joked he'd try the animal's technique at home before they addressed it being the last episode of the series.

After discussing stag beetles, Michaela told Iolo Williams and Chris: "I hate to tell you, that has brought us to the end of the show... There's never been a dull moment."

Addressing viewers at home, Chris said: "We want to thank everyone here at RSPB and all of the staff, all of the volunteers and all of our partners who have helped with the programme - particularly the scientists that we have rung up in the middle of the night."

He continued: "Thank you for all of the photographs, the clips and the questions you have sent in.

"We will be coming back for Winterwatch 2025 in January, but in the meantime, we want to leave you with some of the most heartwarming, some of the most beautiful, some of the best moments of this extraordinary spring which we've had the privilege of enjoying."

Viewers flocked to Twitter as they felt emotional about the series ending after thoroughly enjoying it.

The Repair Shop: The three best fixes that amazed viewers

Sue penned: "Please BBC bring back Autumn Watch, this content is genuinely what I pay my TV Licence for. #Springwatch."

A second added: "Can't believe we have to wait until January for our next wildlife instalment whoever axed Autumn Watch needs to rethink what the licence payers want. Bring in back! #SpringWatch."

A third added: "@BBCTwo We want @BBCSpringwatch to have its Autumn Watch show back! We cannot wait until 2025!"
