ITV Good Morning Britain: Susanna Reid apologises as host makes Michael Gove mistake
GOOD MORNING BRITAIN host Susanna Reid was left hugely embarrassed today when she made a hue slip-up whilst discussing the latest news reports regarding Conservative Party leader candidate, Michael Gove.
GMB: Susanna Reid apologises after hilarious on air gaffe
Susanna Reid, 48, was joined by Piers Morgan, 54, to present the show this morning, with the pair discussing the news regarding Michael Gove, 51, with several guests.
Gove has recently admitted to take Class A drug cocaine several times during his time as a journalist 20 years ago before he stepped into the political world.
In explaining the premises of the story on Good Morning Britain, Reid had a slip of the tongue, leading her to apologise.
Instead of saying Gove admitted to taking the drugs whilst working as a journalist, Reid said the MP had taken the drugs “on several journalists”, leaving her hugely embarrassed.
Sorry, I’m so sorry
Reid said after the advertisement break: “Conservative leadership candidate Michael Gove has admitted he was fortunate to avoid jail for using cocaine on several journalists.”
The presenter then put her hand to her mouth in realising her mistake and began to laugh nervously as Morgan remarked: “On several journalist, what?!
“Do you know something we don’t?” Morgan quipped, with Reid inaudible as she continued to laugh over slip of the tongue.
Trying to rectify her error, Reid said through the laughter: “He was using it on several occasions,” before descending into a fit of giggles.
“Sorry, I’m so sorry,” Reid exclaimed, before clarifying: “I don’t have inside information. He used it on several occasions as a journalist.”
The MP, who is currently running to be the next Prime Minster, apologised for his actions on the Andrew Marr Show yesterday, telling the host: “I deeply regret the mistake that I made. It was a crime, it was a mistake.”
Gove’s admission has sparked the debate on whether the politician is being hypocritical and Ranvir Singh, 21, told the presenters why Gove’s actions can be seen as such.
“If you’ve got law makers, those rules that bind us all, preaching essentially ‘Do as I say, not as I do,’ it is a huge problem.
“Because if they then as future Prime Minister then toughen up laws that punish those who posses or take drugs, what they’re saying is actually ‘You’re not allowed to do it because you’re not lucky enough to get away with it in the way I was in my past.’
“‘Therefore I’ve been able to have this glittering career in politics because of that of a criminal record.’
“And it smacks of privilege and position and power and all the things in a way that Tory leaders have always been accused of that they are privileged.”
Tory leadership: Marr tells Gove he could have gone to PRISON
Singh continued: “You look down the list of so many Oxford educated members, there’s such a divide between the people, the masses feel about Tory leaders in general.”
Later today, Gove and Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, 52, will formally launch campaigns to be become the next Conservative leader.
The two MP’s are the strongest contenders gong up against Conservative leadership candidate Boris Johnson, 54.
Theresa May, 62, announced her departure form office last month, formally standing down from the position on the June 7 with the new Prime Minister set to be revealed at the beginning of next month.
On last week’s show, Kate Garraway, 52, debated the issue of whether stay at home mother’s should receive a wage with model Faryal Makhdoom, 27, wife of boxer Amir Khan.
