BBC weather: -10 temperatures and ice hit UK
Britons will have to bare the bitterly cold weather for some time as temperatures plummet across the UK.
In some regions, the heat value is expected to fall to a staggering -10 degrees Celsius following the arrival of Arctic air.
Also, there is going to be some sleet and snow over the hills, as well as a few outbreaks of rain and grey clouds.
Meteorologist Matt Terry issued an ice warning on BBC Breakfast after explaining how temperatures had drastically fallen.
A few showers overnight means icy conditions down coastal counties of England.
He said: “A few showers overnight means icy conditions down coastal counties of England. Bright start to the east but lots of cloud in the west.”
This morning there is widespread frost in Scotland and England, with temperatures down to minus seven degrees Celsius.
Elsewhere, there will be some icy patches following the early showers on Friday morning.
Today, a band of cloud travelling across Northern Ireland and into western parts of England, Wales and Scotland is expected to bring more rain, sleet and snow.
Areas likely to be most affected by the troublesome trio includes Cumbria, the higher ground in Wales, the Pennines and the Southern Uplands.
Rain, sleet and snow could also affect lower grounds, as well as the Midlands and the West Country.
It is coldest today in the east where, this afternoon, temperatures could range between three and five degrees.
In the south and west temperatures are slightly higher, with figures ranging between six and nine degrees Celsius.
Friday is not going to be as sunny as Thursday, but the northerly winds will have calmed down.
As temperatures nosedive, leading bookmaker Coral has put odds on this month being the coldest on record at 5-4.
Also, the firm are offering odds on the capital city to get snow this week as the heat value plunges across the UK.
Coral make it a 4-6 chance snow falls in London by the end of the weekend.
“Winter really has arrived now and most parts of the UK are going to find no escape from the minus temperatures over the next week or so,” Coral's spokesman Harry Aitkenhead said.
“With snow sweeping down the country too there's every chance that this January will go down as the coldest on record, and our odds show that possibility is very much alive.”
Having seen forecasters predicting an extension of cold weather, the bookies also make it odds on at 4-5 this winter goes down as the coldest on record.
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.
