ITV will be broadcasting Vera series nine tonight (Sunday, January 13) at 8pm. Vera series nine will again consist of four feature-length episodes running to two hours each. The core cast are set to be reprising their roles with a number of guest stars making an appearance each week - here’s a look at the actors from series nine.
Who is in the cast of Vera 2019?
DCI Vera Stanhope - Brenda Blethyn
Brenda Blethyn returns to her now iconic role as famous detective DCI Vera Stanhope for a ninth year.
Veteran star Blethyn is no stranger to stage or screen with a career spanning nearly three decades.
Some of her biggest parts include Between the Sheets, War and Peace, and the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice.
Speaking about returning for a ninth series, Blethyn said: “I know the character pretty well and as different writers come onto the show, all first rate, I strive to keep Vera’s character as Ann Cleeves created her.”
She went on to hail Paul Kaye, who plays the new pathologist Dr Malcolm Donahue, saying: “Paul brings a very interesting dynamic to his character and the show.
“Malcolm is very stern which can often come across as him being rude.
“He is there to get a very serious job done so he doesn’t hold back if he feels Vera is overstepping the mark or cross examining his work. He’s been great to work with.”
DS Aiden Healy - Kenny Doughty
Kenny Doughty is once more coming back as DS Aiden Healy, the loyal and reliable partner to Vera.
Haling from Yorkshire, Doughty is an actor and director with credits such as Snowpiercer, Stella, and Love, Lies and Records.
DC Kenny Lockhart - Jon Morrison
Jon Morrison is back as DC Kenny Lockhart, a trusted member of Vera’s team who sometimes takes things at his own pace.
Morrison is best known for TV shows and previous roles include High Times, Dream Team and Servants.
DC Jacqueline ‘Jac’ Williams - Ibinabo Jack
Ibinabo Jack is going to be bringing more dry wit and a no-nonsense attitude as DC Jacqueline ‘Jac’ Williams.
Rising star Jack joined Vera last year which marks her biggest part to date having previously had a role in Two for Joy.
DC Mark Edwards - Riley Jones
Riley Jones will be reprising his role as DC Mark Edwards, who may be the baby of the team but is becoming a skilled detective.
Jones is another up-and-coming star with his past productions including Run and Wolfblood.
Pathologist Dr. Malcolm Donahue - Paul Kaye
Paul Kaye will be joining the team as new pathologist Dr. Malcolm Donahue, who presents a challenge to Vera.
The pair have a chequered history and his pedantry is a point of contention for Vera - will the pair manage to work together successful?
Comedian and actor Kaye has had roles in everything from Game of Thrones, Wanderlust, Three Girls and Zapped.
There will also be appearances from guest cast members including Peter Davison, Adrian Lukis, Mark Addy, Natalie Gumede, among others.
Vera starts on ITV tonight at 8am
