Fans of the US hit comedy series The Big Bang Theory will come to an end next year, as hitmakers call it a day on production.
Warner Bros Television, CBS and Chuck Lorre Productions confirmed that the comedy series will conclude with it’s upcoming season.
The 12th season is due to start in September airing in the US before hitting UK airwaves a few weeks later.
As the season comes to an end, a series finale will bring a conclusion to 12 years of comedy in May 2019.
We are forever grateful to our fans for their support
Debuting in September 2007, the hit comedy series has aired a total of 279, including those of the final season.
In a joint statement the trio of production companies thanked fans, stating: “We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past 12 seasons.”
The show has built a massive global fan base, with the series being available to stream in many international countries.
Concluding their statement, the production companies said: “We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show's success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close."
Starring the likes of Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki, the comedy series follows the lives of young science geniuses and their other halves.
With global success the show went on to receive 52 Emmy nominations, winning 10 of the critically acclaimed awards.
Following in the success of fellow hit US sitcom Friends, which ran for 10 series, The Big Bang Theory will be the longest-running multi-camera series in the history of television.
Filmed in front of a live studio audience, many viewers labelled The Big Bang Theory as the new Friends, which concluded three years prior to the science-based sitcom launched.
In gaining huge popularity, the show launched a spin off series following the success of one of its main characters.
Sheldon Cooper is a theoretical physicist who has gained a huge following due to his on screen antics.
Most notably, the character is adored for the long standing joke of Sheldon drawing up contracts with almost every person he meets, lining out the rules of their relationship.
Due to his popularity a spin-off entitled Young Sheldon was confirmed in 2016, a prequel series following the life and times of a young Sheldon Cooper.
Debuting in September 2017, the show is narrated by Sheldon actor Jim Parsons as he recounts the adventures of his college days.
Following in the success of its parent series, Young Sheldon was renewed for a second series earlier this year and will premiere in the Autumn.
However, could there be further spin-offs in the future focussing on the other characters and will Young Sheldon continue in the success of its predecessor?
There had been huge speculation over whether The Big Bang Theory would come to an end, with the stars of the show stating earlier this year there could be a possibility the 12th series would be the last.
The Big Bang Theory will return to the UK later this year.
