BERLIN has ramped up security ahead of major events in the German capital after the deadly terror attack in Manchester.

Former US president Barack Obama is expected to be among 100,000 people attending a gathering of German Protestant Church members as the country marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.
Mr Obama is due to take part in a podium discussion with German Chancellor Angela Merkel near the city's iconic Brandenburg Gate on Thursday.

Also on the agenda for Germany is the German soccer cup final which takes place in Berlin on Saturday, drawing tens of thousands of fans.

Berlin's top security official, Andreas Geisel, told public broadcaster RBB-Inforadio that authorities believe there is a "high abstract threat level" but have no concrete indications an attack is planned.
The attack in Manchester saw 22 people killed - including children as young as eight years old - and more than 60 people injured after a suspected nail bomb was detonated outside the Manchester Arena.

The deadly blast took place after a concert by US popstar Ariana Grande.
