South Africa terror fears: Police find suicide vest, DOZENS of bombs and AK-47s in sting
TERROR fears have been raised in Johannesburg after police discovered 60 bombs and a suicide vest stashed in the basement of a shop.
Police have evacuated the area after a devastating arsenal was discovered
A mass evacuation is underway after police unearthed an apocalyptic arsenal of AK-47s, bombs, pistols, hand grenades and a suicide vest near Rand Central.
The police bomb unit and dog squad found “a lot” of automatic weapons and explosives - and police spokesperson Mavela Masondo has not ruled out a terrorist motive, according to South Africa’s EyeWitness News.
Mr Masondo: “We can confirm that there is one vest with a suicide bomb that we recovered.”
Builders carrying out work on Dover Road originally found what they thought was a suspicious package and called police.
The authorities then swarmed on the scene and the true extent of the stash was revealed.
A sweep of the area also revealed 15 pistols in nearby locations.
In total, 60 mortars, seven rifles, 15 pistols, 11 revolvers and four hand grenades, according to the Randburg Sun.
The stash includes 60 mortars, grenades and SK-47s
Dover Road and Rand Central has been closed while controlled explosions take place.
No arrests have been made.
