Thailand is world-famous for its stunning beaches that inspired a Hollywood blockbuster that sent millions hunting for their own sandy paradise.

But if scenes worthy of The Beach are what you’re after, then Patong might be a place to avoid - at least according to some brutal reviews that are being given by recent visitors.

The once stunning seaside resort on Phuket Island seems to have fallen victim to overtourism - with the clear waters being clogged up with rubbish and tourists being harassed and ripped off by vendors.

Other concerns include traffic mayhem and public transport issues due to the influence of the so-called taxi and tuk-tuk operators.

From one calling it the “most disgusting” place they have ever visited through to others warning to only enter the water “at your peril” the prognosis of the famous resort seems grim.

Thousands have taken to the travel review website Tripadvisor to make their thoughts known on the coastal location on the west coast of the island.

One said: “The ugliest, most disgusting place I’ve ever visited.”

They added: “Thailand is beautiful but Patong was grim and seemed to attract the worst people - both vendors and tourists.”

Another was sickened by the water. They said: “Thick, brown, disgustingly smelly water. The raw waste entering the bay from the river at the south continues to pollute the bay. Enter the water at your peril and NEVER get it in your mouth!!!”.

They added: “In summary; a dirty, dangerous, noisy slum well worth avoiding.”

Another warned that tourists would only enjoy it if they like loud noises and chaos.

They said: “If you like built up city life full of noise, chaos, music so loud you can’t hear yourself think, poor food and expensive drinks if you happen to be tagged by an ‘escort’ then you may like this place.

“This was not why I wanted to come to Thailand which has somehow disappeared from this place.”

One visitor made a rather sickening discovery. They said: “I was only there for one hour, and I'm glad I didn't spend any additional time there. What a dump! Garbage everywhere - I saw condoms floating in the water. The whole thing was gross.”

However, the beach has been given an overall rating of 3.5 out of a possible five - and still boasts plenty of fans.

One happy visitor said: “We loved the friendly locals, the incredible food, and the vibrant nightlife.”
