Snipers guarded the Queen at commonwealth summit
SECURITY was tight as the Queen and Prince Philip arrived in Malta yesterday for a Commonwealth summit.
A convoy of military vehicles surrounded the royal plane on the runway at the island’s international airport and snipers were posted on the roof of the terminal building.
Wearing a light blue tweed outfit with matching hat, the Queen was greeted by Malta’s prime minister Joseph Muscat and the British High Commissioner Rob Luke before being driven away in a 1950s Austin Princess.
She later attended a welcome ceremony at San Anton Palace with Malta’s president, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca. The ceremony had been due to take place in St George’s Square in Valetta but was moved to the palace because of bad weather.
