One of the British hikers who went missing on Tuesday in Majorca has been reportedly found dead, while the second UK national who vanished after a violent storm hit the mountainous area of the Balearic island is still missing.

Spanish police said a woman was found near the spot where Spanish police had begun their search. In an earlier statement, the force had claimed the person found during the operation was a 32-year-old man.

A new official statement by the Civil Guard said: “With regards to the search operation that is being conducted in the Sa Calobra area, the body discovered corresponds with that of a woman and the person still missing is a man.”

The desperate search and rescue mission, involving police and firefighters, is being carried out in a mountainous region in northwestern Majorca.

It had to be temporarily suspended due to a storm raging in the area.

Police officers are trying to establish the hiker's whereabouts by triangulating their mobile phones.

It is believed the hikers were near the Torrent de Pareis, a river in the Tramuntana mountain range on Majorca’s northwest coast, when they vanished.

Parts of the island, including the mountain range, have been affected by severe flash flooding after the Balearic island was battered by heavy rain on September 3.

A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency services coordination centre said this morning, prior to the tragic finding of one of the hikers: “A search is ongoing for two hikers missing since last night in the vicinity of Torrent de Pareis in Escorca.”

The missing Brit and the woman were part of a group of five that had taken off for a hike on Tuesday afternoon before the storm hit, local media reported, with three managing to safely reach a mountain hut just after midnight.

This comes as the Civil Guard said this morning it had rescued 10 hikers from several different groups who had remained trapped near the Torrent de Pareis yesterday due to the bad weather.
