The Israeli military has announced it has carried out a strike on a UN school - with locals reporting up to 40 dead.

The Israeli airstrike was carried out in the al- Nuseirat refugee camp in Gaza, where many displaced refugees had fled to, because it "contained a Hamas compund".

Local journalists claim an Israeli warplane fired two missiles at classrooms on the top floor of the school, while the IDF claims steps were taken to "reduce the risk of harming uninvolved civilians".

The IDF said it had "eliminated" Hamas and Islamic Jihad "terrorists" who took part in the sickening 7 October attack, where 1,200 people were killed and 251 taken hostage.

Hamas-run Gaza government media office has said 40 people were killed in the early hours of Thursday morning. The death toll could not be verified.

Palestinian journalists posted footage on X of rows of bodies wrapped in shrouds at a morgue and destroyed classrooms.

The school is run by Unrwa, the UN refugee agency for Palestinians.

"Enough war! We have been displaced dozens of times. They killed our children while they were sleeping," a woman in a video can be heard shouting.

Ismail al-Thawabta, director of the Hamas media office, rejected Israel's claims that the UN school was hiding a Hamas command post.

"The occupation uses ... false fabricated stories to justify the brutal crime it conducted against dozens of displaced people," he told Reuters.

According to Hamas-run health ministry, at least 36,580 people have been killed in Gaza since the October 7 attacks.
