Baby and eight others injured after 'British tourist' drives car into crowded bar

A four-month-old baby was among eight people injured after a British tourist allegedly ploughed into a busy bar at a Spanish tourist hotspot.
The horrifying smash in the town of Corralejo on the island of Fuerteventura saw the car collide with the terrace bar on Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen at around 11.30am today (September 1).
Local media report the car was being driven by a British tourist, although this has not been confirmed.
The incident left eight people injured, five of them seriously. They had been sitting on outdoor terrace tables outside the busy bar.
Several were airlifted to Las Palmas hospital on Gran Canaria for emergency surgery.
The four-month-old baby was among those seriously injured, and was airlifted to a children's hospital.
The others left seriously injured were two women aged 18 and 49, and two men aged 40 and 43, according to La Vanguardia.
Another child, aged five, is said to have suffered moderate injuries.
The Civil Guard has opened an investigation to clarify the causes of the incident.

Police sources have claimed the driver may have suffered a "blackout" while behind the wheel, La Provincia reports.
The sources also said the driver tested negative for drugs and alcohol, the outlet claims.
Eyewitnesses say after wiping out several tables on the terrace of the bar, the car then crashed into a shop on Avenida Nuestra Señora del Carmen.
Sub-inspector of the La Oliva Local Police, Jorge Fleitas, praised the aid given to victims of the crash by bystanders who had been unharmed.
He said: "Their immediate and selfless response has been crucial in this situation. Their solidarity shows the strength of our community in difficult times."
The local Mayor of the La Oliva municipality where the crash occurred said in an evening statement: "Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic event.
"We are working closely with the relevant authorities to clarify what happened and provide support to the victims and their families at this difficult time."
