Donald Trump's Secret Service protection would be revoked if he were convicted of criminal charges and imprisoned, say experts.

The Republican presidential hopeful has been found guilty on all counts in the historic hush money trial in New York.

Trump denied any wrongdoing the case and has consistently characterized the prosecution attempts as a political "witch hunt" during the presidential election year. But it took just 11 hours for the jury to return a guilty verdict on all 34 counts.

The US Secret Service is obligated to guard Donald Trump.

All living ex-presidents and their wives are entitled to lifelong Secret Service protection. Up to the age of 16, their children are also eligible for security.

But, protecting an ex-president while incarcerated is a first. If Trump were found guilty at his Manhattan criminal trial and ordered to serve time, this would pose a dilemma.

Justie Nicol, a former prosecutor and member of the American Civil Liberties Union, told Daily Express US that within jail, the Secret Service would no longer be authorized to protect him.

As she described what his potential prison experience might look like, she said: "For protection, besides the standard prison security measures, additional precautions like increased surveillance and possibly guards assigned specifically to him would be likely.

"Notably, once incarcerated, the Secret Service generally does not have jurisdiction inside the prison system; their protective duty technically ends with incarceration."

However, Nicol suggested that due to Trump's unique profile, "special arrangements" for protection might be considered "by the authorities to address any exceptional security concerns."

Corin Dolan, a security and corrections expert, told Daily Express US: "Due to his high-profile nature and the potential threats associated with his position, extra protection measures would be mandatory.

"These could include constant surveillance, a dedicated security team possibly including former Secret Service members, and stringent access control around his cell and associated facilities."

But he also claimed that the Secret Service would no longer protect Trump if he is incarcerated.

He added: "Speaking of the Secret Service, their duty to protect him formally ceases if he is incarcerated. However, arrangements might be made for an exception based on assessed threats."
