Donald Trump raised eyebrows after suggesting he would have bombed Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine and responded militarily if China invaded Taiwan on his watch, according to reports.

According to the Washington Post, which reported the comments, his alleged remarks at a recent fundraiser surprised some of the donors in attendance.

Trump's former ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OCSE) James Gilmore told reporters in Taiwan earlier this month that the GOP presumptive nominee is not an isolationist, as he is often characterised, and believes he "will be supportive of Taiwan when he becomes president."

China claims Taiwan is its own territory, and has long-threatened an invasion of the country despite stern warnings from the US and other allies.

During his term in the White House, Trump supported Taipei and provided arms sales to the country, which Joe Biden's administration has continued.

Trump's rhetoric towards China has been mixed. Whilst he has made furious attacks on China's dominance and what he sees as Beijing's exploitation of the United States a pillar of his campaigning, he has also offered praise for Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Appearing on Fox News in February, he said: "Look, I want China to do great, I do. And I like President Xi a lot, he was a very good friend of mine during my term."

But he also said, that though he wasn't looking to restart the trade war he began in office, he would consider imposing tariffs of more than 60 percent.

The former President has also provoked panic among NATO allies by questioning the money spent on Ukraine aid and threatening to to pull the US out of the military alliance.

But his supporters merely want fellow members to pay their fair share of funding Europe's security.

Trump has also poured praise on the leadership of Russia autocrat Vladimir Putin and claimed last year that their positive relationship would allow him to "settle" the war in 24 hours.

But he has repeatedly suggested that support for Kyiv would have to be worthwhile for the US if he was in charge.

In February he wrote on his Truth Social site: "We should never give money anymore without the hope of a payback, or without 'strings' attached."

Two months later, he posted: "As everyone agrees, Ukrainian Survival and Strength should be much more important to Europe than to us, but it is also important to us! GET MOVING EUROPE!"
