Retired nurse Anne James was found dead at her home in Walsall, West Midlands, from suspected knife injuries after what police described as a “shocking, violent attack”.

Anne was born to help. She did what she could to offer support and advice to people, particularly vulnerable women
Mrs James and her husband had collected antiques and she may have been the victim of a botched burglary attempt, police believe.
She was the director of The Haven charity in Wolverhampton which helps vulnerable women and children who are the victims of domestic violence.
She also worked with Wolverhampton Clothesline, which supports homeless women and those forced into prostitution.
Her family said in a statement: “We are all devastated at the loss of a loving wife, mum, grandma and great-grandma.

A former colleague said: “Anne was born to help. She did what she could to offer support and advice to people, particularly vulnerable women.
“If she got attacked by someone she was trying to help, then that would be just awful.
“She was a wonderful person with an absolute heart of gold.”
