The 55-year-old asked if the “man in the corner” was Labour MP David Lammy, 43.
But the presenter was left red-faced after she was corrected by political reporter Beth Rigby, who highlighted to was actually Trevor Phillips – the former Equalities and Human Rights Commission chief.
Burley’s embarrassing gaffe caused a Twitter storm, with viewer Jo Coles tweeting: “Kay Burley thought Trevor Phillips was David Lammy! #cringe.”
And other Twitter users said there was no excuse for the presenter’s mistake, as the two MPs hardly bear a resemblance to each other.

Another stunned user sarcastically wrote: “Kay Burley just mistook Trevor Phillips for David Lammy - Can’t blame her, they’re pretty much twins -born 19yrs apart.”
Ian Brindle was also at a loss as to why Burley was confused, writing: “They look quite different.”

Another Twitter user, called Noogie, questioned Burley's ability to report on the EU referendum.
Noogie said: "According to Kay Burley, David Lammy and Trevor Phillips are alike. Totally out of her depth."
Burley’s toe-curling error came shortly after polls closed to voters.
