First white British jihadi revealed as middle-class son of organic farmer and bookseller
The middle-class son of an organic farmer and a bookseller from Oxford has been dubbed 'Jihadi Jack' after he was revealed to be the first white British youth to join ISIS.
The 20-year-old had told his parents he was going to Kuwait to study Arabic in September 2014 before secretly travelling to the ISIS capital of Raqqa in Syria.
Now known as Ibrahim and Abu Muhammed, he is believed to live in the Iraqi city of Falluhaj with his new wife and son.
He was liked by a lot of the students. That's why this whole thing of him going to live in Syria and join Isis doesn't make any sense
Letts attended Cherwell School in Oxford and was described by friends as a funny and friendly classmate and passionate Liverpool fan.
One former pal said: "He was liked by a lot of the students. That's why this whole thing of him going to live in Syria and join Isis doesn't make any sense."
He drank alcohol, smoked cannabis, admired graffiti artists including pacifist Banksy and was described as an atheist who was uninterested by religion.
However, this appeared to change during the Arab Spring of 2011. Soon after, he began to learn Arabic and attend a mosque near his home. Friends report that he became radicalised in private prayer meetings.
He made contact with an ISIS recruiter over social media and hatched a plan to join the terrorists in the Middle East.
