Michael Gove sets new target for GCSEs
MICHAEL Gove is set to trigger a new battle with teachers today by making GCSE exam targets tougher for the worst-performing schools to end “low-expectations culture”.
The Education Secretary will warn that Britain risks falling behind Asian economies unless it accelerates the pace of improvement.
His new target of 50 per cent of pupils attaining five A*-C grade GCSEs, including English and maths, by 2015 would require the worst-performing secondaries to reach the current average level.
Those which fail could face takeover by a successful neighbouring academy school.
