A mum has only just realised why you shouldn't store your bananas in a fruit bowl - and is insiting others follow in her footsteps.

Bananas are a staple in the kitchen and a perfect for cutting up for breakfast, or grabbing for a quick snack. Not only are they one of your five-a-day and packed with nutrients, but they are great for booster your energy, supporting digestion.

Plus as they are packed with potassium they are good for protecting your heart health.

However, bananas can be an annoying fruit to store. They can quickly go off, and turn black and squishy before their expiration date. This is because they contain a high amount of ethylene gas which it is why it is often the first fruit to go bad.

Most of us may store bananas in a fruit bowl - but this could be the worst place you could keep them. Knowing the best spot to keep them fresh ensures they stay fresher for longer.

One fruit fan recently realised that she had been doing it all wrong. Australian mum Vonnie, better know as @vonnie_m, on TikTok often shared food and lifestyle tips with her followers.

But recently she dubbed herself an "idiot" for not realising one thing about her fruit bowl. The mum bought a silver, metal fruit bowl with a hanger on the top of it - but she was never suit what it was there for.

She said: "Am I the only idiot that didn't know this about these kind of fruit bowls? I really had no idea."

Vonnie realised that the hanger on her bowl was for storing her bananas separately from the rest of her fruit. This means she can still store the yellow fruit in the kitchen without worry about it quickly going bad.

Vonnie explained: "I heard that bananas ripen all your other fruit so you keep it separate from the rest of your fruit." She says it stops the rest of your fruit from ripening too quickly. "Please tell me I am not the only one who had just learnt this?"

But people were left divided - as some were stunned the mum never knew about the trick, while others were only just realising too.

One individual said: "Well, 25 years of my life I've been living a lie. You taught me something." Another added: "Didn't know either."

While a third person chimed in: "Omg I'm still learning something every day omg."

However, another said: "Yes, I've know this for ages, sorry." "Everyone knows this," commented another. "Bananas hangers are such old inventions," pointed out one other.

One other shared: "It's definately for bananas, but my grandparents hang their keys on it."
