Dog owners are swearing off groomers after seeing a poor pooch's drastic transformation post haircut.

According to a viral social media post that sparked outrage, the once-fluffy canine was left "traumatised" by its new look.

The shocking before and after images were shared on Instagram, with the dog's owners declaring: "Never letting her get groomed again."

Onlookers were appalled at the pet's appearance following the grooming session, with the pet barely recognisable and sporting only a pom-pom-like tail while the rest of its coat was sheared off.

Public reaction ranged from amusement to concern, as one user commented: "It's cute but she got traumatised."

Another wrote: "That's crazy unhealthy for the dog." Yet another distressed dog lover advised caution, saying: "This is why I always reiterate to the groomer that we do not want any sort of shaving or cutting (also have double-coated dogs).

"They always look shocked that I even mention it because it should be obvious. But clearly, it's not always that obvious."

Some users defended the groomer's drastic action to shave the dog completely, pointing to severe matting as the cause. They commented: "The dog must have been SEVERELY matted they needed to shave all the fur off. That's the owner's fault for neglecting a basic grooming routine."

Another user expressed their frustration, saying: "If a groomer does this it's because of matting, brush your dogs people!!!".

Others also placed the blame squarely on the owner for failing to maintain their pet's coat, which led to the extreme haircut. One person noted: "It's probably the owner's fault for not brushing and maintaining the dogs fur, groomers can't bath a dog with matts so usually they need to shave them."
