The UK is home to a plethora of seaside towns, providing Brits with easy and affordable getaway options.

But only one can now boast the title of being home to the "best fish and chips" in the whole country.

South Shields, located just half an hour from Newcastle, has been dubbed a "half-forgotten" place where the "vibe and verve" of the city next door have yet to reach.

The town boasts several excellent restaurants and Colmans Fish & Chips has repeatedly been voted the best of its kind in the UK.

The café has been owned and managed by the same family since 1926. They heavily rely on local fish to treat customers to mouthwatering treats including real scampi and Thai-style prawn fishcakes - and it's so famous that former US Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton has even once paid it a visit.

The shop offers seasonal specials including line-caught North Atlantic haddock caught regularly by day boats and then prepared with its top-secret batter.

Colmans's motto that "quality is not expensive, it's priceless," has made it a popular retailer well beyond South Shields.

A team from the shop even travelled to Rome to prepare their famous fish and chips for 850 foreign dignitaries and guests marking the late Queen's birthday at the British Ambassador's official residence.

South Shields is now set to undergo a major regeneration after receiving new funds to modernise its tourism facilities.

In January, South Shields received a boost when plans for 18 beach huts, six retail pods, two toilets, an office, a waste store, and a Changing Places facility were approved.

This is part of a regeneration scheme aimed at "revitalising" the seafront and "enhancing the foreshore coastline as a destination of choice".

The local council stated that the project will "improve the South Tyneside experience and hopefully encourage people to return and/or stay for longer."

They added: "This initiative seeks to foster collaboration between local traders, start-ups, and the broader community, creating a year-round attraction."

"The beach huts will be available for daily rental, catering to visitors of the region. Concurrently, the retail pods will be offered for hire/lease, providing local entrepreneurs with the opportunity to establish seasonal pop-up shops for tourists".

Councillor Margaret Meling chimed in: "It's great news that outline planning permission has been granted for this initiative, which will create a year-round family-friendly attraction."
