A three-year-old boy has died at a family festival. 

Police are now investigating his "unexpected" death after the toddler fell ill at Chris Evans' CarFest in Overton, Hampshire, over the weekend.

He is understood to have suffered a "medical episode" and despite medical help could not be saved. The emergency services rushed to the festival site at about 11pm on Saturday (August 24), according to reports.

The boy was taken to hospital where he died a short time later. Hampshire Police has launched an investigation in the wake of the tragedy.

CarFest said its on site medical and security teams with support from the NHS had attended the incident.

A spokesperson for the force said shortly after 11pm on Saturday, August 24, officers were made aware of a medical episode involving a three-year-old boy at CarFest, Overton.

They confirmed the child was taken to hospital, but sadly passed away a short time afterwards. The spokesperson added: "The death is being treated as unexpected and a file is being prepared for the coroner."

A CarFest spokesperson said there was a "medical incident" on the festival site attended to by onsite medical and security teams supported by the NHS. They said the patient was taken off site to hospital.

CarFest was created by DJ and TV presenter Chris Evans to help raise money for children's charities in Britain. It brings together car fans with its offer to admire the fastest motors.

This year's festival ran from Friday, August 23 to Sunday, August 25 and was held at a family-run farm, according to the Hampshire Chronicle.
