England fans set to take over Benidorm as tourism protests rage across Europe

Thousands of Three Lions will be watching the team in the Euro final from the Spanish resort popular with Brits.

Thousands of England fans are attempting to bag tickets to see the Three Lions take on Spain the Euro 2024 final - with some making long and arduous journeys in the hope football is coming home.

Extra flights are being put on from the UK to Berlin as many hope to see the England men's team lift their first trophy since 1966.

However, Germany is not the only destination England fans are flocking to ahead of Sunday evening's match.

Thousands of England and Spain fans are set to watch the two nations clash at pubs and bars in Benidorm - with some jokingly calling the match 'The Battle of Benidorm'.

Around 70,000 pints of beer are set to be drunk at the popular resort on Sunday - with the Sun reporting drinks in glass bottles are being banned from 6pm.

Writing on X, formerly Twitter, fan Ben Rigby wrote: "Benidorm for four nights, England Spain Euro final Sunday, what could possibly go wrong?"

X user Howell Rees said: "I'm in Benidorm next Sunday. Which could turn out to be an amazing night for the Spanish or not. England did play well for the first time in the tournament when it counted

Another fan, Callum, added: "Pray for me, I'm going to be in Benidorm on a Stag Do during the Euros Finals between England and Spain."

User Kaylee said: "Did I just miss the entire match with 0 signal at a Paul Smith gig? Yes. But I now get to watch England in the final in Benidorm. Buzzing."

Another said: "I’m in Benidorm for it, come on!"

Not everyone was as optimistic, with one user saying: "Regardless of whether England or Spain win the Euros this year the people of Benidorm are already set for Civil War."

The match comes as tensions continue over overtourism in areas of Spain, with tourists in Barcelona recently sprayed with water guns and told to go home.

Protests have also taken place in areas including Majorca and Canary Islands, with the former recently named as the most unwelcoming in Europe for British tourists.

Police will increase their presence in Benidorm on match day, with road closures planned and drones set to be used to spot any potential trouble, according to the Olive Press, a local English language side.

It reports Benidorm mayor, Toni Perez as saying: “This will be a day of celebration for the two groups of fans, where a playful and festive atmosphere reigns of quiet and good coexistence between Spaniards and the English.”
