A new global list of the top 25 "best low-cost airlines" has been released - and there are several carriers with a big presence in the UK to choose from.

According to Airline Ratings, the firms landing in the top group include Easyjet, Ryanair, Jet2 and WizzAir, all of which are well-known to British travellers.

Easyjet's main hub is Luton Airport, but it also flies from other UK airports and works on 927 routes to 34 different countries.

Irish carrier Ryanair, which has a UK base at London Stansted, also makes the grade, alongside British firm Jet2 which has large operations in Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham.

Hungarian ultra-low-cost carrier group Wizz Air also has a big presence at UK airports, especially Luton, and operates to around 90 destinations.

AirlineRatings.com said their "editors use 12 criteria" to rate a carrier, including "passenger reviews from several sources, fleet age, product offering and safety and incident rating".

Detailing regions around the globe, the site has chosen a regional winner from the 25 finalists, they are; in the Americas, in the Middle East, FlyDubai and for Asia, AirAsia Group.

Down Under in Australia and the Pacific Jetstar Group was selected as the local winner, with Easyjet coming top for Europe.

Airline Ratings stated on the website that "their rating system takes into account a number of different factors related to audits from aviation’s governing bodies, lead associations as well as the airline’s own safety data".

It added: "Every airline has a safety rating breakdown so you can see exactly how they rate. Over 230 of the airlines on the site carry 99 percent of the world’s passengers have a product rating.

"Given that low-cost, regional and full-service carriers are so different we have constructed a different rating system for each which can be found within each airline."
