Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's dog Lupo 'sparks rise in dognapping'
KATE and William's beloved pet pooch Lupo has caused a rise in dog thefts of the breed, according to reports.
Last year around 3,500 dogs were allegedly stolen – an increase of 17 per cent – leaving their owners distraught.
The biggest rise in dog thefts was with the cocker spaniel, which can cost up to £600 and is the same breed chosen by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The royal couple adopted their adorable puppy in January last year when Kate turned 30.
Thefts of black Cocker Spaniels have soared since Wills and Kate chose one last year
The loyal dog was said to be a comfort to the Duchess while Prince William was posted overseas for six weeks last Spring.
However, it is believed gangs are now operating in the UK specifically targeting dogs, with an increase in thefts from kennels, outhouses and even while owners are walking their pets.
According to reports more than 75 Cocker Spaniels are being stolen every week.
Dog thefts have become an "epidemic", according to the founder of the UK's leading missing dog website.
"There's been a huge increase in missing dogs reported on the site," Jayne Hayes, founder of doglost.co.uk, told Farmers Weekly.
"Especially cocker spaniels and springer spaniels," she added.
