The Royal Family rolled the red carpet once again today in Windsor to welcome Germany's President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to the UK. The King and Queen will host the Federal President and the First Lady, Elke Büdenbender, at Windsor Castle until Friday.
This morning, the Prince and Princess of Wales played a key role in welcoming their German guests, greeting them at Heathrow Airport on behalf of the King, before travelling to Windsor. The state visit, the third the King has hosted this year, marks a shift from the usual protocol that sees just two inbound state visits hosted each year. French President Emmanuel Macron was welcomed in June, and US President Donald Trump visited in September.
The first day of an official visit was marked by an impressive display of pomp and pageantry, with the guests enjoying a carriage procession through the Berkshire town - something Trump missed out on due to security concerns - and a Guard of Honour in the Quadrangle of the castle. In the evening the royals will host a glittering state banquet.
King Charles gave an impressive speech during the State Banquet and stated: "The United Kingdom and Germany are united in a continued belief in democracy, freedom and the rule of law and in a lighter moment the King quipped about his nation's football prowess, saying "in the end, the Germans win".
Mr Steinmeier and his wife Elke Budenbender were guests of honour at the dinner marking their three-day state visit while others present included German supermodel Claudia Schiffer and her filmmaker husband Sir Matthew Vaughn.

Ms Steinmeier follows the visits of French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Donald Trump in July and September, respectively.
But the King is not the first monarch to host three state visits in a year.
Queen Elizabeth II hosted three in 1988: King Olav V of Norway in April, President Keenan Evren of Turkey in July and President Abdou Diouf and Madame Diouf from the Republic of Senegal in November.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife were also shown a Christmas Eve entry in Queen Victoria's diary from 1850 in which she described how her children were delighted with their Christmas tree. Victoria and Albert were responsible for popularising the German tradition of Christmas trees in Britain.
The guests also saw a photograph of Victoria's own tree and presents from 1857.
